MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys varsity basketball team collected a 62-41 home win over Houghton on Tuesday night thanks in part to four double-digit scorers.

Ty Lotterman paced Redmen with 18 points followed by John Thomson with 15. Kam Karp and Drew Wyble each chipped in 10.

The victory improved the UPSSA’s No. 3-ranked team to 9-3 on the season in a game it controlled from start to finish, taking an 18-7 lead after one quarter and doubling that total in the second to go up 36-20 at halftime.

The Redmen again held the Gremlins (5-7) to seven points in the third while adding 14 of their own, going into cruise control for the remainder of the evening.

Marquette was also impressive from the field, shooting 78 percent for the game. MSHS threw up 32 shot attempts and drained 25 of them. Free throws were minimal, with just a combined seven attempts on both sides.

Houghton was led by Michigan Tech recruit Brad Simonsen with 26 points. Justin Jurmu added five for Marquette, while David Eberhard and Thomas Albarello had two apiece.

Marquette collected 23 rebounds with Thomson collecting five of those.

The Redmen visit Kingsford (3-7) for a Great Northern Conference tilt on Thursday.

Gladstone 77, Ishpeming 70

At Ishpeming, it was an offensive slugfest that saw the Hematites coming up just short, falling to 2-7 on the season after their fourth consecutive loss.

Ishpeming fell into a 22-15 deficit after one before making it a three-point game at halftime with the Braves (6-5) taking 41-38 lead into the locker room.

It was the third quarter that ultimately doomed the Hematites, getting outscored 21-9 in the frame and falling into a 62-47 hole entering the final eight minutes of play.

Ishpeming did all it could to mount a comeback but came up seven points shy.

Otto Swanson dropped 20 points for the Hematites with Jacob Kugler adding 16. John Corkin chipped in 12.

Cam Ballard was the Braves’ leading point-getter with 19 followed by Rane Castor with 17.

Ishpeming hosts Houghton on Tuesday.

Westwood 47, West Iron County 41

At Westwood on Monday, sophomore Zachary Carlson scored 14 points and senior Taylor Dellangelo had 12 as the Patriots led at the end of each quarter.

But they had to withstand a comeback led by West Iron’s Justin Nelson, who scored nine of his game-high 23 points in the fourth period.

Westwood took advantage of extra attempts at the free-throw line, make 13 of 16 vs. 7 of 9 for the Wykons.

“I thought we played extremely well on the defensive end in the first half,” WHS coach Scott Syrjala said. “I saw a lot of things improve that we are working on in practice.

“Ty Alderton had a great first half and got into foul trouble in the second. Carlson hit some big shots when we needed them in the second half.

“Zach Beckman gave us really good minutes along with Mason Mariuzza. We are a better ball club when those two get going.”

“Nelson for West Iron is a good player. He has good feet for a kid that big and young. He got going in the second half and with Ty in foul trouble — we had a tough time matching up with him.”
