NMU track and field team hosts only meet of season today

MARQUETTE — Today is the day for the Northern Michigan University women’s track team to host its only meet of the season when the Wildcats hold the Northern Challenge in the Superior Dome. Field events begin at 12:30 p.m. and races on the track commence at 1:30 p.m.

NMU opened its indoor season on Dec. 7 at The Opener hosted by St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. Northern won five events, including four individual races.

Junior Izabelle Peterson, a Marquette Senior High School graduate, won the 60-meter dash in 7.86 seconds with sophomore Ninti Little third and junior Lauren Alarie fourth.

Senior Paige Du Bois led an NMU charge in the 600, where seven of the top eight finishers were Wildcats. Du Bois clocked 1:38.83 with senior Megan Martin and sophomore Hannah Jones close behind.

Freshman Caroline Vegeberg won the mile in 5:20.0, while sophomore Anna Kelley led a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the three-kilometer run in 10:53.48. Senior Hanna Torvi was less than a half-second back in second with freshman Meghan Langworthy third and sophomore Katrina Salmen fourth.

And NMU’s A team won the 4-by-400 relay in 4:12.74 with sophomore Claire Donner, Martin, Jones and Du Bois.

In today’s meet at 1 p.m., the Wildcats honor their seven seniors — Du Bois, Torvi, Martin, Megan Bauer, Victoria Harris, Katelyn Smith and Sydney McPeters.

The meet features the full NMU squad competing against other Upper Peninsula schools with 21 events to be conducted. Members of Northern’s men’s soccer team will also run in some races.
