Marissa Delmont beats buzzer to lift Gwinn girls basketball team to victory

HARRIS — The last time the Gwinn girls basketball team tangled with Bark River-Harris, it was a double-overtime thriller that went the Modeltowners way.

On Thursday night, Gwinn managed to pull off an even more exciting win as Marissa Delmont dropped in a layup with about two seconds left to lift the Modeltowners to a 46-45 victory. Delmont led Gwinn with 16 points, while Grace Peterson had 14 for BR-H.

“We had the ball with 8 seconds left and we got Marissa loose off a double screen,” Gwinn head coach Ben Olsen said. “It was a designed play and we had a girl shooter in the corner. We cleared her out and Marissa had an almost clear path to the basket for the layup.”

The Modeltowners (6-2) trailed by two after the first quarter and 26-25 at the half. However, they dominated the third to take a 40-34 advantage into the fourth, but the Broncos battled back to take the lead that set the stage for Delmont’s heroics.

“It was a back-and-forth affair,” Olsen said. “We led early and they led throughout the middle part. We took the lead in the third and then Marissa went to the bench with four fouls with six minutes to go in the third. We didn’t put her back in until 2 1/2 minutes left in the fourth and they took the lead.

“Then she got loose with 8 seconds left and made the shot with 2 seconds left, but they (the Broncos) were out of timeouts.”

The game was also a good bounce-back win for Gwinn after it fell to Ishpeming on Tuesday.

“Bark River gives us fits for whatever reason whenever we play them,” Olsen said. “They’ve got a good ball club and we’ve had two really close games with them.”

The Broncos won the JV game 40-32.

The Modeltowners head to Negaunee Tuesday.

Ishpeming 45, Iron Mountain 41

At Ishpeming, the Hematites got some key scoring off the bench to outlast the Mountaineers.

Tia Mattila led Ishpeming (3-5) with 11 points, while IM’s Reagan Lundholm led all scorers with 19.

“It was a game of runs,” Hematites head coach Ryan Reichel said. “They would make one and then we would.

“I was proud of the way our girls off the bench played. Tia and Rebekah (Loman) came in and provided so much energy for us and that helped propel us. Lundholm was awesome as we expected and I’m glad we survived their runs.”

Ishpeming led 10-9 after the first quarter and took a 21-15 lead into the half. IM rallied in the third quarter, pulling within one of the Hematites at 29-28, but Ishpeming held on in the fourth.

“In the second quarter, we were forced to use Kayla (Koski) with two fouls because of her ability to make plays and that got us going. She came in with fire and helped lead us to a win.”

The Hematites host West Iron County Monday and IM goes to Westwood.

The Redettes took a 14-7 lead after the first and 29-21 at the half. Marquette then outscored Calumet 12-7 in third to take a double-digit advantage into the fourth quarter.

Marquette also won the JV game 37-32. The Redettes go to Gladstone Tuesday.

The Purple Hornets held a 26-9 lead after the first quarter and basically put the game away in the second as they outscored the Hawks 20-0.
