Marquette Redmen add 2 wins in past week to hockey ledger

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School hockey team improved to 7-2 this season with a pair of victories last week.

The Redmen shut out Hancock 4-0 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette on Tuesday, then took a 3-1 victory at Kingsford two days later.

MSHS hosts its Marquette Showcase this weekend, facing Canton at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sault Ste. Marie at 2 p.m. Sunday, both at Lakeview Arena.

Marquette 4, Hancock 0

On Tuesday, freshman goalie Liam Beerman made 17 saves to record the shutout.

“We did a real good job of not allowing a lot of second chances and Liam Beerman made a couple big saves in the third period to solidify the shutout,” Marquette seventh-year head coach Doug Garrow said. “The team worked hard in the offensive zone and controlled the play below the goal line, which created some nice scoring opportunities.”

Four players each scored a goal, while senior Hogan Nemetz and junior Ansel Frost had two assists apiece.

Freshmen got Marquette off on the right foot on the scoreboard. Jake Garrow scored his first varsity goal with less than five minutes left in the opening period, while Ethan Phillips made it 2-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the second period on a power play.

Senior Cooper Anderson and junior Dylan Baldwin added insurance goals in the third period. In addition to Nemetz and Frost, getting one assist each were freshman Joe De Mattia, senior Jakob Peterson and sophomore Owen Riipi.

The Redmen put 35 shots on Hancock goalie Brandon Pietila, getting at least 11 in each period.

Marquette 3, Kingsford 1

On Thursday, Beerman came within the final two minutes of recording his second straight shutout as his teammates staked him to a 3-0 lead before the Flivvers’ Hunter Fortner got a goal with 1:51 left.

Beerman made 22 saves, while Kingsford’s Evan Hedtke faced 42 shots, including 17 in the second period and 15 in the third.

“Once again, we played a solid game defensively and minimized Kingsford’s second-chance shots,” Doug Garrow said. “We started out a little sluggish offensively but we picked it up in the second and third periods to control the game from that point on.”

Peterson opened the scoring just 1:11 into the game with an unassisted, shorthanded goal, with the score remaining 1-0 until senior Gaetano Cammarata scored the game-winner with about six minutes left in the second period.

Marquette made it 3-0 near the midpoint of the third when senior Andrew Fedrizzi scored.

Anderson, Frost, Cammarata and Jake Garrow had assists on the final two goals as the teams combined to go 0 for 9 on power plays.
