Saginaw Valley State Cardinals sweep Northern Michigan University volleyball team on final regular-season weekend of season

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team might find itself taking a trip to Houghton on Wednesday after the Wildcats lost in three straight sets at Saginaw Valley State on Friday night.

The Cardinals (19-7, 11-4 GLIAC) prevailed 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 to lock up the No. 4 seed and a home berth in the opening-round quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament.

NMU, meanwhile, fell to 11-15 overall and 7-8 in the GLIAC to stand alone in seventh place with eight teams to get in.

Michigan Tech posted a four-set victory at Lake Superior State on Friday to move into a tie for first place with Ferris State at 13-2 in the league.

There are several scenarios where the Wildcats and Huskies can square off in the quarterfinals — if they finish Nos. 1 and 8, Nos. 2 and 7 or Nos. 3 and 6, all possibilities with the tight races for the top four and next four spots in the standings.

On Friday, sophomore Alyssa Milski led Northern with six kills, while Calumet native and fellow sophomore Hailey Wickstrom had five to go with three digs.

Sophomore Alli Yacko made 14 digs, nearly half the team’s total of 31, along with three service aces.

NMU freshman Lauren Van Remortel had 16 set assists, a kill, a block and two digs, while sophomore Lizzy Stark made four kills and four digs.

NMU completes its regular season at 1 p.m. today in Sault Ste. Marie against Lake Superior State.
