Newberry, Superior Central players make 8-player All-Upper Peninsula football teams

MARQUETTE — Three players from Newberry and one from Superior Central earned Eight-Player Dream Team and First Team honors when the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters met for their annual football meeting in Marquette on Thursday.

Newberry senior Austin Troop was the lone player from those two schools to be voted to the Dream Team, making it as a punter.

He was reported to have averaged 38.4 yards per punt and didn’t have a punt blocked this season, Newberry’s first in the eight-player game.

The Indians, who finished just out of the playoffs despite compiling a 5-4 record, also placed junior Ivan Oswald on the First Team at defensive tackle and junior Logan Depew as a linebacker-defensive back.

From Superior Central, senior Zach Englund made the First Team offense as an end. He made 37 catches for 864 yards and 12 touchdowns, also running 37 times for 244 yards and three more TDs while playing his natural position for barely more than four weeks.

Then he was switched to quarterback as the Cougars had a merry-go-round of signal callers due to injuries, where he completed 17 of 39 passes for 341 yards, a TD and two interceptions. He was among those QBs knocked out, which ended his season in the seventh week.

Englund, a first-year football player, also accumulated 516 yards in kickoff returns and 213 yards in punt returns, each including a TD return.

Players of the Year included, on offense, Noah Gorzinski of North Central, and on defense, Jimmy Storey of Pickford.
