RAPID RIVER — Rapid River pulled away starting late in the second for a 58-14 eight-player football triumph over Superior Central on Friday night.

Many players contributed for the Rockets (4-5), who substituted freely.

“We’re happy we got to play on our home field and end on this note,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga.

The Cougars (2-7) got within 28-14 during the second quarter of this Great Lakes Eight East Division match-up when senior quarterback Kevin Wynn scored on a 26-yard dash up the middle.

Rapid River responded 66 seconds before halftime, gaining a 36-14 cushion on junior Bryce Lundquist’s one-yard run up the middle.

The Rockets scored 20 points in the third quarter, taking a 52-14 advantage on senior Tyler Sundling’s 30-yard pass to Jackson Hooten in the left flat, then concluded their scoring on senior Miguel Isaac’s one-yard run through the right side midway through the fourth.

Rapid River opened the scoring on Sundling’s 18-yard run along the right sideline and made it 12-0 on his 65-yard punt return.

Senior Azariah Hernandez them made it 20-0 on 19-yard run around left end late in the first quarter.

The Cougars got on the board just 10 seconds into the second stanza on Wynn’s 21-yard pass to junior Clayton Collier.

“We were banged up,” Cougars’ coach Sam Eggleston said. “We had a lot of guys playing who probably shouldn’t have been playing tonight. Our kids never quit all year.”

Ninety seconds later, the Rockets went ahead 28-8 on Sundling’s 36-yard aerial to junior Griffin Flath.

The Rockets finished with 268 yards with Sundling completing 7 of 20 passes for 139 yards and three TDs and an interception.

“Give Superior Central credit,” Ostrenga said. “They held their composure. Sam does a nice job over there. They had their share of adversity, too.”

The Cougars, ravaged by injuries much of this season, had 194 yards in total offense. Wynn ran 21 times for 83 yards and was 6-of-18 passing for 86.
