Northern Michigan University Wildcats women to run at GLIACs

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team heads south for the GLIAC Championships this morning.

Fresh off a sweep at the Upper Peninsula Championships at home last Friday, the Wildcats head to Purdue Northwest in Westville, Indiana, for the six-kilometer race set to start at noon EDT.

The meet features live results at the website thtiming.com. It takes place on the PNW-Westville campus with three loops making up the 3.7-mile course. The men’s course is 8K, or five miles.

NMU not only won the U.P. Championships over Michigan Tech and Bay College, but swept the top six places, led by sophomore Anna Kelley winning in 19:27.7. Each of the top six Wildcats all finished within 30 seconds of her — freshman Meghan Langworthy in second, freshman Kimberly Carviou third, freshman Caroline Vegeberg fourth, sophomore Katrina Salmen fifth and freshman Morgan Lyon sixth.

Several other top Wilcat runners didn’t participate and last ran at the all-NCAA Division II, 36-team Conference Crossover on Oct. 12 at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. They include freshman Madison Malon, who led Northern on the Illinois course in 23:39.6 on a rainy, windy day and senior Katelyn Smith. Also back for the GLIACs should be senior Hanna Torvi, a point scorer all season.

Last year, NMU finished fifth at the GLIAC meet.
