Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team kicks off league campaign by hitting the road

MARQUETTE — The women’s soccer team at Northern Michigan University kicks off its GLIAC season on the road at 4 p.m. today with a match in Big Rapids against Ferris State.

The Wildcats remain on the road for a noon Sunday match in Midland against Northwood, and will also travel to Houghton for a match vs. Michigan Tech at noon on Sunday, Oct. 13. NMU returns home for a 4 p.m. game vs. Grand Valley State on Friday, Oct. 18.

NMU improved to 2-5 with a 2-1 home win over Purdue Northwest on Sunday, using sophomore Caroline Halone’s penalty-kick goal as game-winner. Senior Jamie Montgomery also scored for the Wildcats.

Halonen leads the team with 34 shots, including 14 on goal, even though Sunday’s goal was her first of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto leads the GLIAC in saves with 38 and averages 5.38 per game, having made 11 over two home games last weekend.

Ferris State (6-1-1) defeated NMU 2-1 last season, though Northern leads the all-time series 12-8-5. Northwood (4-3) already has defeated the Wildcats 2-1 in a nonconference game earlier this season.
