Gwinn volleyball team downs Ishpeming Hematites in 4 sets

ISHPEMING — Gwinn finished off a successful regular season by defeating Ishpeming in four sets, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-23, on Tuesday.

The Modeltowners stand 25-12-2 overall, 7-1 in the West PAC and 5-1 in the Mid-Peninsula Conference. Gwinn ended up as runner-up in both conferences.

“We started the night strong and then got too comfortable,” GHS head coach Toni Roberts said. “We played a lot of subs in the third set and lost the momentum and let Ishpeming take control.

“Their coach (Katt Beerling) has done a wonderful job helping turn the program around. Ishpeming girls work hard and they never quit. They worked us hard in the second two sets.”

Marissa Delmont led the Modeltowners with 15 kills with just three errors, 26 set assists and four service aces, while she was second on her team with 14 digs.

“Marissa led us in all aspects tonight,” Roberts said. “She was dominant for us. She controlled our offense and defense with ease. It was a heck of a way to end her senior season.”

Tianna Taylor added eight kills and 13 digs, while Halle Beauchamp had seven kills and Megan Ruokolainen five kills, three aces, 12 digs and her team’s only block. Teammate Emily Curtice added a team-high 21 digs to go with six kills, six assists and three aces as Elliina Miilu had three kills, three assists, three aces and five digs.

“We have been trying to work on different things to get ready for postseason, and we executed well in the first two sets,” Roberts said. “We fell apart in the second two (sets) and played really sloppy volleyball. Ishpeming outworked us in the last two (sets), which had been an ongoing problem for us.”
