GLIAC football honors NMU’s Cox

MARQUETTE — Freshman Tyquan Cox of Northern Michigan University has been named GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week in football.

Cox, a Chicago resident, earned the award after his standout performance in the Wildcats’ game against Wayne State on Saturday, when he returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown following a Warriors’ TD in the first quarter at the Superior Dome.

He finished with three returns for 145 yards and impacted the game by prompting Wayne State to stop kicking the ball deep and settling for short kicks instead.

Overall this season, Cox had made nine returns for 258 yards.

Despite the feat, NMU lost 27-14 to the Warriors to fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC.

This marks the second straight season a Northern freshman has earned Player of the Week honors following its game against Wayne State. A year ago, current sophomore Anthony Ladd earned the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honor.

The Wildcats travel to Houghton to face Michigan Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Miners Cup on the line. The game will be telecast by WLUC-TV6 and will be on the radio at WUPT The Point 100.3 FM.
