Northern Michigan University volleyball team travels to Indianapolis Invitational today

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team’s early-season schedule of busy weekends keeps going today and Saturday when the Wildcats play four opponents at the University of Indianapolis Invitational.

Today, NMU takes on GLIAC foe Davenport at 12:30 p.m. EDT and Minnesota State-Moorhead at 4:30 p.m., then on Saturday faces St. Leo at 11:30 a.m. and former GLIAC member Gannon at 4 p.m.

The Wildcats split four matches at the season-opening Keweenaw Classic in Houghton last weekend, beating the University of Mary and Minnesota-Crookston in a pair of five-set matches while losing to Upper Iowa and then-No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State, each in four sets.

Northern sophomore Hailey Wickstrom of Calumet capped the weekend at Michigan Tech by being named to the all-tournament team with 49 kills and a hitting percentage of .283 while adding seven blocks in the four matches.

Sophomore teammate Lizzy Stark had 66 kills, or 3.67 per set, and tied for the team high with eight service aces and was second with 53 digs while making three blocks.

Balanced defense included sophomore Lauren Caprini making 59 digs with Stark making 53 and sophomore Alli Yacko 48.

At the net, senior Sarah Kuehn led the team with 15 blocks, which is tied for third in the GLIAC. Freshman Abigail Durecki added 10.

Freshman Lauren Van Remortel finished with 135 assists, including a high of 53 vs. Crookston. Sophomore Abby Fortune came in for the Upper Iowa match and tallied a career-high 35.

Against this weekend’s opponents, NMU is 2-1 vs. Davenport (1-3 season record), 4-2 vs. Moorhead (4-0), 1-0 vs. St. Leo (3-1) and 15-2 vs. Gannon (2-2).
