NEGAUNEE — The high-flying Negaunee High School girls tennis team split the two matches that went three sets and won the only tiebreaker it was involved in to post a 7-1 victory over visiting Menominee on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win posted by the Maroons’ Jenna Nolde over the Miners’ Lilly Nelson, Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari was happy with how Nelson and teammate Jillian Skewis played.

Skewis won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Josie Hofer.

“We had two really strong efforts at (Nos.) 1 and 2 singles,” Saari said after his team improved to 7-1. “Lilly put up a great fight and it was a fun match to watch.

“Jillian played a very strong match, and did a nice job playing confidently and controlled a lot of points.

“We still have some room to grow and have a few good opportunities ahead of us yet to do so.

The Miners’ other tough matches came in doubles.

At No. 4, Negaunee’s Emma Miller and Daylyn Drew prevailed 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Kennedy Olson and Anna Nerat, while at No. 3, the Miners’ Shayla Williams and Madi Austin pulled off a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over Emma Anderson and Rylee Doyle.

Negaunee is back in action this afternoon when it hosts Munising.

Marquette 8, Munising 0

At Marquette in a makeup match, the Redettes had little trouble handling the Mustangs, losing just eight games that including a retirement after one set at No. 4 doubles.

MSHS No. 1 singles player Elysa Olivier felled Munising’s Logan Peters 6-1, 6-0, starting a string of four singles matches where Marquette lost just two games.

That included 6-0, 6-0 blankings by No. 3 Zoey Brian and No. 4 Ruth Hummell.

The story was much the same in doubles, led off by another 6-0, 6-0 blanking posted by the Redettes’ Ryleigh Jackson and Kennedy Tate.

Munising was the most competitive at No. 2, where Marquette’s Sydney McCarthy and Breanne Sandstrom won a 6-2, 6-1 match over the Mustangs’ Lori Mattson and Skylar Campbell.

Marquette visits Ishpeming this afternoon.
