Gwinn Modeltowners, Munising Mustangs, Newberry Indians lose football games Friday night

GWINN — Things went well for Gwinn until late in the first half against Hancock on Friday night in high school football.

The visiting Bulldogs turned around a 12-7 deficit late in the first half to take a 27-12 victory.

“We had plenty of opportunities to win, but with our inexperience, we unfortunately found some ways to lose,” Modeltowners head coach Dion Brown said.

Gwinn (0-4) built its early lead with a pair of touchdown passes thrown by quarterback Caleb Anderson.

Anderson throw a 17-yard scoring pass to James Harnick in the first quarter and a 60-yard strike to ToQuan Starnes in the second period. Both extra point attempts failed.

Then Hancock (3-1) pulled off a big momentum-changing play that seemed to propel the Bulldogs for the second half when Austin Salani returned an interception 95 yards for a TD a few minutes before halftime.

Hancock tacked on three more scores in the second half.

L’Anse 42, Munising 17

At Munising, Josh Huotari rushed for 133 yards in just 14 attempts but it wasn’t nearly enough to fend off the Purple Hornets.

L’Anse led 7-3 after one quarter following Mustangs’ kicker Isaac Cooper making a 30-yard field goal.

Huotari tacked on a pair of second-half rushing TDs, but by then the Hornets had built a rather large lead. Cooper caught a two-point PAT pass, too.

Forest Park 58, Newberry 14

At Crystal Falls, the Indians lost for the first time after the Trojans’ Gabe Scarlassara and C.J. Post each scored three rushing TDs.

Forest Park (3-1) built a 52-0 halftime lead as Scarlassara, who ran for 172 yards, had all three of his TDs in the first quarter.

“Our offensive line played strong,” said Trojans coach Dave Graff. “Our backs are starting to run downhill a little bit.”

Newberry (3-1) scored the game’s final two TDs, getting a 47-yard scoring run from Ivan Oswald in the third and 12-yard run by Josh Gielecki in the fourth.

The Indians had four turnovers, three of them lost fumbles.

Newberry hosts Rapid River (1-3) on Friday.
