Negaunee wins, Westwood ties in boys tennis meets

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee boys tennis team hasn’t been tested much this season, but the Miners got a good battle from Marquette on Monday afternoon.

However, the Miners used some strong doubles play to earn a 6-2 win over the Redmen and remained undefeated in dual meets at 12-0.

“Our doubles teams have continued to do a lot of good things,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said. “We like our depth throughout, but they’ve really been a bright spot. Peyton (Anderson) and Jordon (Mason) came back and played well this week after last Thursday. We’re getting better.”

All of the Miners’ doubles teams completed two-set wins, as did Anderson at No. 3 singles and Mason at No. 4. Anderson defeated Kevin Zhang in two sets, 6-1, 6-0, and Mason dispatched Ben Sternschuss as well, 6-0, 6-4.

Marquette’s two wins came at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Alec Olivier didn’t lose a game at No. 1 in his two-set win over Chas Kumpula, 6-0, 6-0, while Nick Olivier defeated Will Luke in at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4.

At Westwood, the Patriots and Wykons tied as WIC swept singles and Westwood doubles.

In singles, the Wykons’ Holden Ross (No. 1), James Swanson (No. 2) and Mitch Ballinger (No. 3) all cruised to two-set wins, while Alex Wickstrom outdueled Westwood’s Matt Paavo for a 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 4.

In doubles, the Patriots got three easy wins, with the best match of the day coming at No. 2 where the Westwood team of Connor Traver and Hudson Uren gutted out a three-set victory over WIC’s Nolan Anderson and Lucas Isaacson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

“We had ideal conditions for tennis with two evenly matched teams,” Patriots head coach Chris Jackson said. “It doesn’t happen very often where one team sweeps singles and the other sweeps doubles.

“Hudson and Connor responded really well after losing the first set in their three-set win at (No.) 2 doubles. This should be a preview of what to expect in the (MHSAA Upper Peninsula) Division 2 finals in a couple of weeks.”
