ESCANABA — The Escanaba softball team proved its Great Northern Conference chops as it swept the Marquette Redettes with back-to-back 10-0 shutout wins on Thursday.

With the two victories, Esky officially clinched the GNC championship over Gladstone.

The nightcap saw rain, shine, wind, the occasional flash of lightning in the distance and Gabi Salo adding another perfect game to her resume.

“Esky is ranked No. 1 in (MHSAA) Division 2 for a reason,” Redettes’ coach Paul Seibert said. “Salo’s an amazing pitcher. We tried bunting towards the end of the second game and put some balls in play, but she’s a great pitcher.”

Salo went six innings, punching out 16 while allowing no hits.

Amanda McIntire took the loss for Marquette (5-22) over three innings. She allowed seven hits, six runs and two walks while striking out three. Lexi Trombley pitched in relief over three innings.

Esky (26-3) also took an early lead in the first inning in the opener.

Marquette’s sole hit came when Jordan Haynes singled on a ground ball to left field.

McIntire took the loss for Marquette over four innings, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and four walks while striking out four.
