6 Northern Michigan University track & field athletes named Midwest All-Region

NEW ORLEANS — Six Northern Michigan University women’s track and field athletes earned major awards Tuesday as they were named to the All-Midwest Region team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Former Marquette Redettes Izzie Peterson (100- and 200-meter dashes) and Shayla Huebner (400 and 800) each earned spots on the team.

Peterson won the 200 at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships and was a First Team All-GLIAC honoree. She’ll also compete in both events at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships later this month.

Huebner finished second in the 800 at the GLIAC outdoors to notch All-GLIAC Second Team honors, while also breaking a school record. She will also compete in the 800 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Teammate Michelle Juergen earned her spot on the team in the high jump. She will also compete in that event at the NCAA finals. She was named conference Field Athlete of the Meet at the GLIAC meet.

The other three honorees came from the 4-by-400 relay team. The squad is made up of Huebner, Sydney McPeters, Paige Dutcher and Paige Du Bois as they set a school record recently at the Dr. Keeler Invitational. The foursome also picked up All-GLIAC Second Team awards after finishing second at the meet.

This is Juergen’s second all-region award, while it is the first for the other five athletes. The top five individuals in each event and the top three relays from the region gain all-region status.
