Caro Els, Austin Elsner lead Northern Michigan University golfers

MARQUETTE — Junior Caro Els was named to the all-tournament team as she led the Northern Michigan University women’s golf team at the NC4K College Classic in Blacklick, Ohio, on Monday and Tuesday.

Senior Austin Elsner paced the Wildcats men at the three-day Greyhound Invitational that also ended Tuesday and was held in Indiana.

Els leads NMU women

NMU finished in fourth place among 19 teams at the NC4K event with a two-day score of 633, just three strokes behind third-place Ohio Dominican’s 630 and the best score among a half-dozen current GLIAC schools.

Indianapolis won the event with 599, while Findlay was runner-up with 608. Trailing the Wildcats were Tiffin in fifth with 637, Northwood sixth with 641 and Ferris State seventh with 645. Also in the field were Saginaw Valley State, Lewis, Walsh and Ashland.

Els, a native of the African country of Namibia, finished third with 147 on rounds of 74 and 73. Senior teammate Karissa Guthrie tied for 24th with 83-76–159, while another senior teammate, Haley Hewer, tied for 34th with 77-85–162.

Northern freshman Abigail Boozer tied for 40th with 76-89–165, while senior teammate Baylee Dunmire was 98th with 92-103–195.

The Wildcats travel to the Walsh Invitational in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday and Sunday.

Wildcats men 17th

At Noblesville, Indiana, the Northern men were 17th of 18 teams, beating out SVSU. The Wildcats had 904 over the three days with SVSU scoring 907. Ferris State won with 851, followed by Indianapolis with 868 and Findlay 873. Northwood was 16th with 901.

Elsner tied for 14th place with 74-72-71–217, while senior teammate Owen Beyer and junior teammate Chris Black were part of a tie for 51st with 226. Beyer had rounds of 78, 75 and 73, while Black carded 75, 75 and 76.

NMU junior Kurtis Fontinha was 93rd with 83-77-79–239, while senior Logan Haight was 94th with 79-84-81–244.

The Wildcats have this weekend off before packing their golf bags for downstate Augusta, located between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, for the GLIAC Championships from April 19-21.
