HOUGHTON — A Northern Michigan University graduate has been named Michigan Tech’s assistant athletic director for sports medicine.

Nate Larson earned his master’s degree in exercise science from NMU after receiving his bachelor’s degree in athletic training at the University of North Dakota in 1999.

Larson also served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Northern from 2000-02 and was a teaching assistant and approved clinical instructor there.

Beginning his duties officially on Feb. 25, Larson oversees athletic training efforts for the Huskies and continue to be the hockey team’s primary athletic trainer along with being an instructor in the Kinesiology and Integrated Physiology Department.

Having worked for U.P. Health System-Portage as a certified athletic trainer since 2002, Larson will also be a liaison between the university and hospital.

“Nate has a tremendous amount of experience in the field and with Michigan Tech athletics,” MTU athletic director Suzanne Sanregret said. “We’re excited that he is taking on this leadership role with our athletic training group.”

He worked with MTU athletics from 2002-08 with the volleyball, cross country, nordic skiing, men’s and women’s basketball and track and field programs, then returned to Tech in September with the hockey team.

Larson and his wife LeAnn reside in Chassell with a daughter and two sons.
