Ex-Northern Michigan University hockey players debut in pros

MARQUETTE — Two of three former Northern Michigan University hockey players who recently signed professional deals in the American Hockey League debuted for their new teams this past weekend.

Goaltender Atte Tolvanen made 26 saves Sunday in his debut with the Syracuse Crunch, a Tampa Bay Lightning affiliate.

Forward Adam Rockwood has played in two games, recording an assist in his Friday debut with the Spring Thunderbirds, an affiliate of the Florida Panthers.

Meanwhile, WCHA Player of the Year Troy Loggins was a scratch over the weekend with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Detroit Red Wings top farm club.

Loggins and Tolvanen were honored with being named to the WCHA First Team for the recently completed 2018-19 season, while Rockwood was the league’s Second Team.

The trio were leaders on an NMU team that finished second in the WCHA regular season and reached the WCHA playoff semifinals, both for the second straight season under second-year head coach Grant Potulny.
