Baraga Vikings slip a spot in final girls Upper Peninsula basketball poll

MARQUETTE — Baraga bumped up against the glass ceiling that is St. Ignace in the final Upper Peninsula high school basketball poll released today by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Only girls votes were tabulated this week as the boys district tournaments were conducted last week. The girls began their postseason play Monday night, with those game not reflected in today’s poll.

The Vikings (15-2), who fell a spot to No. 3 this week in Division 4, had little chance of convincing anyone that they are better than the Saints (20-0), who have walloped the opposition often to the tune of 50 points or more against the best the eastern U.P. has to offer.

They’ve also taken on and beaten downstate teams like 18-2 Reese, 15-4 Detroit Mumford, 16-2 Charlevoix and 16-4 Kingsley.

Baraga fell from No. 2 a week ago after splitting a pair of games, losing by three points to new No. 2 Ewen-Trout Creek.

In addition in Division 4, L’Anse (11-9) picked up four votes to miss the top five by just one point.

In the Divisions 1-3 rankings, all five teams held their spots, which includes No. 1 Westwood (19-1), No. 3 Marquette (17-3) and No. 4 Negaunee (16-4).

In the final state Associated Press girls poll of the season, also released today, Baraga held onto the No. 10 spot, just four points ahead of E-TC in 11th. St. Ignace was a narrow No. 1 over Adrian Lenawee Christian.
