Marquette icers blow past Grand Haven at Traverse City Showcase

TRAVERSE CITY – The Marquette Senior High School hockey team rolled to its seventh straight victory after a five-goal first period propelled the Redmen to a 7-3 win over Grand Haven on night one of the Traverse City North/South Showcase Thursday.

Marquette head coach Doug Garrow said he was happy to earn a win, but thought his team’s effort could have been better in the last two periods.

“It was a good win but we need to play better (tomorrow),” he said. “Anytime you can win a game, you’re happy. We let off the gas in the second and third though. We have a much better opponent (tomorrow) so we need to be better.”

MSHS scored four unanswered goals in the first period, the first coming just 36 seconds into the game from senior forward Kobie Guidebeck which was assisted by junior and senior forwards Ryan Baldwin and Tanner Phillips.

Less than a minute later, sophomore forward Joseph Luke found the back of the net, putting one by Grand Haven goaltender Peyton Boyle for a 2-0 lead, with senior forward Nick Leafers and sophomore defenseman Evan Kroll assisting.

Baldwin had the third Marquette goal which was assisted on by junior defenseman Jakob Peterson while Guidebeck tallied his second of the night after that to make it 4-0 less than eight minutes into the game.

The Buccaneers finally found the scoreboard at 10:20 on a goal from Kyle Eveland, but Leafers put in the fifth MSHS goal for a 5-1 Redmen lead after 17 minutes.

Senior forward Sean O’Connor scored 54 seconds into the second period for a 6-1 lead before Phillips made it 7-1 at the 1:42 mark.

Grand Haven found the net two more times, once in the second and the third.
