DEARBORN — Seniors Owen Beyer and Austin Elsner had top-10 finishes to lead the Northern Michigan University men’s golf team to an eighth-place finish at the two-day Motor City Invitational that wrapped up Monday.

Beyer tied for fourth place in the 19-team, 99-golfer field with rounds of 77 and 74 for 151. Elsner was just one stroke back at 152 and tied for seventh with rounds of 73 and 79.

Findlay’s Luke Kelly was the low shooter, putting together rounds of 73 and 74 for 147.

Frost delayed Sunday’s start, not allowing some golfers to complete their rounds that day as they had to come back early Monday to finish, then play their second round that afternoon.

NMU totaled 635 over two days, 321 in the first round and 314 in the second, missing fifth place by 10 strokes. Findlay won the tourney with 610, while Bellarmine was runner-up with 612, Wayne State No. 1 third with 616 and WSU No. 2 fourth at 621.

The Wildcats finished ahead of current and former GLIAC schools Hillsdale, Ashland, Saginaw Valley State, Northwood, Davenport, Wisconsin-Parkside, Lake Superior State and Malone.

Northern junior Kurtis Fontinha tied for 60th with 83-83–166, while sophomore Kyle Pouliot of Gladstone tied for 67th with 90-78–168 and senior Logan Haight tied for 79th with 88-87–175.

The Wildcats men’s and women’s teams return to action Monday for the two-day Kohler Classic in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The men will play at Whistling Straits, the home of several professional majors, while the women will be at the nearby Irish Course.
