Newberry boys runners-up at Manistique Invite

MANISTIQUE — Newberry made a run at Sault Ste. Marie in the boys meet, but ultimately the Blue Devils swept both titles at the Manistique Invitational held Tuesday.

The Indians boys scored 109 points, just a dozen points behind the victorious Soo. That was despite Newberry winning three relays and five individual events.

Junior Brandon Christiansen won the 100-yard dash in 11.22 seconds and 200 in 23.10, while teammate David Carlson took the discus, Josh Slaght the high jump and Jeff Rahilly the long jump.

Names weren’t available for any of the runners in Newberry’s winning relays.

Manistique placed fourth in the boys meet with 77, Munising was sixth with 56 and Gwinn seventh with 14.

Of those area schools, the lone winner was Munising’s Matthew Revord in the pole vault. The Mustangs also had runners-up in the 400 and 800 relays, Jason Cornish in the high jump and Christian Cole in the 100.

Manistique’s Alex Misniakiewicz was second in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 and as part of the 3,200 relay, while teammate Schyler Andersen did the same in the shot put and discus.

Gwinn got a runner-up finish from David Duvall in the 100 hurdles.

In the girls meet, just two area athletes won events — the Modeltowners’ Brenna Bruce in the discus and Emeralds’ Ashley McDonald in the pole vault.

The Soo ran off with that title with 214 1/3, with St. Ignace second with 148, Manistique third with 46, Gwinn fourth with 39 1/6, Munising fifth with 38 1/3 and Newberry seventh with 18 1/6.

Manistique had a runner-up in the 3,200 relay, Gwinn a second in the 400 relay, Munising with Madeleine Peramaki in the 1,600 and Newberry with Karley Honeysette in the long jump.
