GWINN — Munising looked dominating in just its third match of the season with a 7-1 high school boys tennis victory at Gwinn on Tuesday.

“We are really just gaining match experience, but the season is short, so the players need to learn their lessons quickly,” Mustangs coach Rod Gendron said after his team improved to 2-1. “Mason Schieding … really moves well on the court. He is figuring out how to play the toughest position at No. 1 singles, but he never gives up on any point, so he can really wear an opponent down.”

Schieding scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Gwinn’s Jacob Porubsky.

“The cool, windy weather played a factor in our match,” GHS coach Dan Turecky said. “We were shorthanded and had to default at No. 3 and 4 doubles.”

Two matches went to three sets, including in the Modeltowners’ lone win.

Gwinn’s Chase Jensen won No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 victory over Ketan Mulye, while Munising’s Landon Peters and Eli Werner scored a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 comeback win at No. 1 doubles over the Modeltowners’ Tucker Taylor and Mason Bockert.

Both teams are scheduled to play on the road today, Gwinn at Westwood and Munising at Escanaba.

Negaunee 8, Gladstone 0

At Gladstone, Negaunee (7-0-1) remained undefeated with a shutout, not losing a game in six of the eight matches, including all four doubles flights.

Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari was particularly impressed with his No. 4 doubles of Evan Hassell and Tom Kinjorski, who defeated the Braves’ Ethan Stoken and Jordan Lenards.

“Evan and Tom are doing a nice job,” he said. “Each flight continues to improve and that’s important in a short season.”

Negaunee hosts Marquette at 4 p.m. today.

Westwood 8, Iron Mountain 0

At Westwood, the Patriots (5-1-1) put forth a dominant performance in their sweep.

Westwood’s Adam Hyttinen at No. 1 singles and Matt Paavo at No. 3 each won matches in two sets, while fellow Patriot Anthony Couveau had a competitive match at No. 2 with IM’s Shane Brooks.

“Anthony continues to add to his game every match,” Patriots head coach Chris Jackson said. “He is willing to make adjustments that might make improvements.”

The Patriots didn’t have much trouble on the doubles side, either, as they won each match in two sets.

Iron Mountain 5, Ishpeming 3

At Ishpeming, the Mountaineers outlasted the Hematites to split its visit to Marquette County.

The teams divided the singles matches evenly with Ishpeming’s Darius Yohe defeating Dominic Schinderle at No. 3 and Preston Collette winning by forfeit at No. 4.

In doubles, the Mountaineers won the top three flights, while the Ishpeming (1-5) team of Tyler Larson and George Lasko won at No. 4.

“It was close all the way through,” Ishpeming head coach Erl Langness said. “We had three tiebreakers and we won all three. Sometimes you can build on that, but that didn’t necessarily happen.”

Ishpeming hosts West Iron County Monday.
