Iron Mountain Mountaineers hold on for tie with Marquette Redettes to clinch conference soccer title

MARQUETTE — Iron Mountain rallied from a two-goal deficit Tuesday and tied Marquette 2-2 to clinch the Central Upper Peninsula Soccer Conference championship.

The Mountaineers (9-1-1, 4-0-1) clinched the title after defeating Marquette (4-1-1) last week.

The Redettes’ Lauren Kurzawa scored about 20 minutes into the first half, according to IM coach Steve Hodgins.

“A Marquette striker picked up a loose ball past midfield, made a few nice dribbles and got behind our defense,” Hodgins said. “She zipped her shot past our keeper.”

Marquette scored a second goal with about 20 minutes left to play by Ivy Pickard.

“It was a hard, high shot that got through the finger tips of Lauren,” Hodgins said of junior goalkeeper Lauren Lesky. “We looked rather deflated after that second goal but we kept grinding away.

“Adversity isn’t always handled well in high school athletics but this group has nerves of steel.”

Brianna Hoffman and Riley Poupore answered with the tying goals.
