Gladstone, Menominee claim titles at Marquette Invitational high school golf meet

MARQUETTE — The two high school golf teams from the Upper Peninsula’s “banana belt” emerged with victories at the Marquette Invitational held at the Marquette Golf Club on Wednesday.

Gladstone took the boys title with a score of 313, while Escanaba finished second at 327 and the host Redmen third with 331. Norway was next with 341, followed by Negaunee with 376, Kingsford 381 and Munising 386. Menominee had just one golfer and thus, no team score.

The Braves’ Rudy Peterson won medalist honors by four shots after shooting 73. Negaunee’s Jordan Mason and Esky’s Trevor Denome tied for second with 77, while Marquette’s Ethan Sellers and Gladstone’s Andy Pouliot tied for fourth with 78.

Also breaking 80 were the Redmen’s Tyler Bergwall, Gladstone’s Jordan Ahlgren and Escanaba’s Nathan Rousseau, each with 79.

Munising top shooter was Bailey Masters with 95.

In the girls meet, Menominee easily with 401 to runner-up Escanaba’s 460. The Maroons had all four of the golfers that counted shoot no more than 104, something no other team No. 2 shooter could claim.

Munising was third with 472, with Marquette one stroke back at 473 and Negaunee having 538.

But it was the Eskymos’ Paxton Johnson that was girls medalist with 82. Munising’s Taylor Downs took second with a 90 and Gladstone’s lone golfer, Sophia Lippens, was third with 96.

Menominee teammates Arikah Bellisle and Olivia Badker finished tied for fourth, each with 98.
