4 Marquette Senior High School hockey players named all-state

PLYMOUTH — Four Marquette Senior High School hockey players were named Division 2 all-state as selected by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association during a meeting at state championship games in Plymouth on Saturday.

Senior Joe Phillips was named to the First Team for forwards after he led Redmen players in scoring in the Great Lakes Hockey Conference with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists in 11 games.

Another senior, Aydin Frost, was named to the Second Team among defensemen. Frost, Marquette’s lone First Teamer in the GLHC, helped the Redmen post the fourth-best goals-against average in the league and was also his team’s No. 4 scorer and tied for tops among defensemen in league games with two goals and six assists for eight points in 11 contests.

Two of their junior teammates made the D-2 honorable mention lists.

Tanner Phillips, Joe Phillips’ cousin, made the HM list for forwards after he notched eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 12 GLHC games.

Tyler Bergwall was honorable mention for goalies, posting an .889 saves percentage and 2.29 goals-against average in seven league games.

Several other Upper Peninsula schools also had Division 2 honorees:

Kingsford — Daunte Fortner, First Team forward; Nick Murvich, Secont Team forward

Hancock — Alex Nordstrom, First Team forward; Teddy Randell, First Team forward; Dawnson Kero, First Team goalie; Colton Salani, Second Team forward; Teddy Perrault, Second Team defense

Houghton — Dawson McKay, First Team forward; Kevin Bostwick, First Team defense; P.J. Donnelly, Second Team forward; Brendan Erickson, honorable mention defense; William Stier, honorable mention goalie

Calumet — Sam Erkkila, First Team forward; Brent Loukus, First Team forward; Davin Lehto, First Team defense; Dean Loukus, Second Team forward; Nick Voelker, honorable mention goalie

Sault Ste. Marie — Mathew Thurston, First Team forward; Avery Teneyck, First Team defense
