Taylor, Forbes lead Gwinn boys past Mid Peninsula

GWINN — Juniors Tucker Taylor and Austin Forbes combined for 35 points to propel the Gwinn High School boys basketball team to a victory over Mid Peninsula 66-51 on Wednesday night.

The Modeltowners improved to 3-13 on the season with the victory.

Gwinn head coach Jim Finkbeiner said a fast offensive start and a full team effort was the key to victory.

“We came out and started really well and had a great effort to begin the game,” he said. “That’s what you want as a coach. We played four good quarters and we got guys off the bench some playing time and everyone made contribututions.”

The Modeltowners stormed out of the gate and raced out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter and held a halftime lead of 40-16.

The Wolverines came out of the break strong with 15 third quarter points and 20 more in the fourth, outscoring Gwinn 20-12 in the final frame. It wasn’t enough however, as Gwinn managed to hold the lead with ease.

Senior guard Isaiah Guevara added nine points for Gwinn. Mid Peninsula was led by Terry Brower with 19 points while Zach Englund tallied 18.

Mid Peninsula hosts Munising on Friday while Gwinn travels to Westwood on Tuesday.

Gwinn also won the JV contest 65-35.
