ISHPEMING — Manistique got caught up in a numbers game Wednesday night as the Emeralds fell to Westwood 66-6 in the semifinals of the MHSAA Division 4 team regional tournament being held at the Patriots’ gym.

Manistique, with just six wrestlers available, got its lone victory at 119 pounds when freshman James Schroeder pinned Wyatt Carlson in 3 minutes, 49 seconds.

“We knew we wouldn’t fill all the weight classes,” Emeralds’ coach Mike Perkins said. “This is a huge rebuilding year, but we all came together. We told the kids ‘Look at where you started and where you are now.’

“We improved a lot this year. Westwood has a very good team and a great group of guys. Our guys gave a great effort. It just wasn’t our day.”

Schroeder, who will be the team’s lone representative in Saturday’s individual regional at Charlevoix, pulled Manistique within 12-6 with his victory.

The lack of numbers, however, made it difficult for the Emeralds to match up with the Patriots.

Manistique’s Matt Wood pushed the 160 bout into the third round before he was pinned by Rocco Carlson at 4:47.

In other contested matches between Westwood and Manistique, the Patriots’ Jackson Vidlund and Joseph Derocha also posted pins in the first two minutes of their matches.

In the title match that Onaway won 42-36, Westwood’s Nathan Brewer at 112 and Wyatt Carlson at 119 started with a bang, pinning their opponents in a combined 81 seconds for a 12-0 lead.

Onaway just as quickly turned it around by winning the next four bouts by pin, none of which made it two minutes.

The 145-pound match was the first to go beyond the first period as Onaway’s Sam Tennant, on the strength of a third-period near fall, gained a 10-7 victory over Brandon Perry.

The Cards extended their lead to 30-12 in the 152 bout as a third-period takedown helped Coty Ionetz earn a 7-3 triumph over Rocco Carlson.

Onaway then added two pins for an insurmountable 42-12 cushion following Colby Pauly’s pin of Brenden Collins in 65 seconds at 171.

“We knew they were tough in the middle,” Westwood coach Dan Carlson said. “There’s some things we wish we would have done different, but it is what it is. We had the momentum, then they took it.

“For a young team, (Onaway) really showed their stuff. Tonight, we were a match short.”

The Patriots finished strong with Kurt Anderson (215), Josh Bartle (285) and Derocha (103) recording pins following a forfeit at 189.

Westwood is taking a school-record 11 grapplers to Saturday’s individual regional.

“We’re going to keep our heads up and go into Saturday with some fire,” Coach Carlson said. “I think having the individual regional ahead of us will help take little bit of the sting off this one.”

Onaway, also entered in the same individual regional, will head to Ford Field in Detroit for the team state quarterfinals Feb. 23.

“We knew we had to score big in the middle,” Onaway coach Mark Grant said. “Those guys have carried the load and we picked up support wherever we could. We appreciate how well we were taken care of by the community and their sportsmanship was top of the line.”

Onaway reached the championship round by eliminating St. Ignace 48-36.
