IRONWOOD — Most of top-five spots remained locked in place for area teams in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls conducted by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Westwood moved out of the top five in the Class A-B-C girls poll, but only missed fifth-place West Iron County by a single point.

And Marquette broke its tie with Escanaba and took over the No. 2 spot alone in the Class A-B-C boys poll, though the Redmen only lead third-place Gladstone by a single point.

The other six area teams in the poll remained in their spots from last week — Negaunee is second, Marquette third and Ishpeming fourth in the A-B-C girls rankings, while Munising is first among Class D girls.

For the boys, Ishpeming is still fifth in Class A-B-C while Munising is fourth in Class D.

One new wrinkle, however, came in the Associated Press statewide polls that like the U.P. poll come out every Tuesday morning.

Negaunee moved up two spots to third in the Class C poll, but for the first time, the Miners received one of the three first-place votes, something even St. Ignace can’t claim despite it occupying a spot ahead of Negaunee.

The Munising girls remained No. 3 place in the Class D statewide rankings.

Also from the U.P., Chassell is eighth and Cedarville 12th in Class D girls; Iron Mountain is second among Class C boys; and Dollar Bay is second with a first-place vote, Ewen-Trout Creek fifth and Rapid River tied for seventh in Class D boys.

Among top games involving area teams, three big matchups are set for tonight — the Westwood girls are at West Iron County, the Marquette boys are at Ishpeming and Munising boys are hosting Rapid River.

In addition, the Westwood girls are at Negaunee on Friday and Ishpeming boys host Iron Mountain on Monday.
