Marquette Senior High School boys, girls qualify for state ski finals

BELMONT — Though the Marquette Senior High School Alpine ski team didn’t sweep regional titles as they’re accustomed to doing, they still did enough to easily qualify for the upcoming state finals.

The Marquette boys did win their 13-school regional at Cannonsburg Ski Area with 53 points, well ahead of runner-up Traverse City Central’s 85 and third-place Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern’s 127 1/2.

The Redettes needed a strong showing in slalom to pull out a runner-up regional finish in their meet, scoring 64 points to TC West’s 52. TC Central was third with 94 as three full teams and other top individuals qualify for the Division 1 state finals to be held at Boyne Mountain on Monday, Feb. 26.

The Redmen were led by Drew Thomas, who won the slalom and took second in giant slalom. Times weren’t available from the boys meet.

Teammate Aaron Grzelak was runner-up in slalom and sixth in GS, while three other Marquette boys had a single top-10 finishes.

Truman Durand was fifth in slalom, Hayden Kauppila sixth in slalom and Ashton Branam eighth in GS.

Sadah Scheidt won the girls slalom to lead a dominant performance by the Redettes. Her two-run time was 1 minute, 0.23 seconds as she and teammate and slalom runner-up Ainsley Kirk had the only sub-30-second single-run times of the day.

Kirk’s combined time was 1:01.47 with a 29.84-second first run. Scheidt first run clocked in a half-second better at 29.34 seconds.

Two more MSHS girls finished in the top 10 in slalom. Natalie Robinia was fifth with 1:03.04 while Jacey Johnson was seventh with 1:03.47.

With the exception of Kirk, giant slalom was more of a struggle for the Marquette girls. Kirk finished second with 51.83 seconds, posting two of the eight runs by all girls that were under 26 seconds, 25.95 on her opener and 25.88 on the second.

Johnson was 12th with 53.10 seconds, Scheidt 16th with 53.63 and Robinia 19th with 53.87.
