Westwood sweeps pair of wrestling meets from Newberry, Gwinn

NEWBERRY — The Westwood wrestling team picked up two wins Wednesday night.

The Patriots defeated host Newberry 42-36 and then beat Gwinn 50-8. No score was available from Gwinn-Newberry.

“We had some first-time wrestlers really step it up and our sophomores had some tough matches against seniors from Newberry,” Westwood head coach Dan Carlson said. “It was a good opening night and we know what we need to work on.”

Against Newberry, the Patriots used six forfeits and a pin by Amanda Argall at 119 pounds to top the Indians.

Newberry picked up four pins with Nathan Magnuson at 135, Jacob Gribble at 140, Cameron Symonds at 160 and Alex Henry at 171 along with two forfeits.

Against Gwinn, the Pats picked up pins from Carter Guidebeck at 160, Sam Gilles at 215 and Tino Anderson at 285 along with wins from Argall at 112 and Elliot LeMire at 135. The Patriots also earned four forfeits.

Gwinn’s points came from a win by Dougie Larson at 130 and a forfeit at 152.
