Ryan Glover, Matt Brauer lead Marquette boys’ swimmers to win over Gladstone, 98-73

MARQUETTE — Ryan Glover and Matt Brauer each accounted for four victories as the Marquette Senior High School boys swimming and diving team defeated Gladstone 98-73 at the MSHS pool on Wednesday afternoon.

Erin Vanderschaaf and Mollie Kilpela each had a hand in three wins as the Redettes posted a 101-79 win over the Braves.

Overall, each Marquette team won nine events, including 1-2 finishes in three girls events and two boys races.

Coach Nathan McFarren reported there were 26 personal best times posted by Marquette swimmers, and a number made Upper Peninsula Finals qualifying times.

The biggest drop in a time for an MSHS swimmer was reported as Wyatt Clement knocking 19.05 seconds off his 200-yard individual medley time down to 2 minutes, 46.75 seconds.

Glover won the 100 butterfly in 59.13 and 500 freestyle in 6:17.10, while Brauer took the 200 IM in 2:19.88 and 100 backstroke in 1:02.03, all U.P. Finals qualifying times. In addition, Glover was with Marquette’s winning 200 free relay, which clocked 1:41.33, Brauer with the victorious 400 free relay in 4:13.92 and both were on the first-place 200 medley relay quartet in 1:50.18.

Also in the boys meet, Jack Caron won the 50 free in 24.84, a U.P. qualifying time, and swam with the winning 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.

Josh Nykanen and Robert Bell both swam with the 200 free relay winners, while Nykanen was also with the 200 medley relay victors and Bell with the 400 free relay winners.

In the girls meet, Vanderschaaf won the 200 IM in 2:24.21 and 100 fly in 1:08.25, while Kilpela got the 50 free in 26.89, each as U.P. Finals qualifiers. Kilpela and Vanderschaaf were both on the winning 400 free relay, which timed 4:01.85, with Kilpela also on the 200 free relay victors in 1:50.50.

And Taryn Aho won the 200 free in 2:09.20 and Paige Whaley the 100 free in 58.54, both U.P. qualifying times, as Aho also swam on the winning 200 free relay and Whaley on the victorious 400 free relay.

Marquette’s next meet is on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Westwood.
