Marquette swims to triangular sweep

MARQUETTE — Marquette Senior High School swept a triangular swimming and diving meet at home against two of the other traditional powerhouses in the Upper Peninsula on Saturday.

The Redettes scored 150 points in the girls meet as Houghton accumulated 109 points and Sault Ste. Marie 68. For the boys, MSHS had 122 to 95 for the Soo and 87 for Houghton.

Sixteen girls and eight boys established personal best time for Marquette, which also won all three relays in each meet.

Taryn Aho was a double winner in individual events, taking both the girls 100-yard breaststroke and 500 freestyle. Teammate Paige Whaley added a victory in the 200 free, Mollie Kilpela in the 50 free and Erin Vanderschaaf in the 100 backstroke.

For the Redmen, Matt Brauer was a winner in the 200 free, Josh Nykanen in the 100 butterfly and Ryan Glover in the back.

The Marquette teams host another meet against Gladstone at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
