MARQUETTE — Westwood had the best finish of any area team at the Marquette Challenge high school wrestling tournament held at Marquette Senior High School all day Saturday.

The Patriots accumulated 39 points to finish 12th among 21 teams listed at the website www.trackwrestling.com.

Westwood junior Nathan Brewer finished fourth at 112 pounds, while junior Sam Gilles was fifth at 189.

Marquette scored 32 points to tie for 14th, getting sophomore Joe Lagrou in third place at 103.

Gwinn and Negaunee did not score points.

From Delta County, Gladstone was the highest-placing Upper Peninsula team in sixth place with 128 points.

The Braves had a champion in junior Adam Bruce at 130 pounds, while sophomore Cole Hansen and 140 and senior Jared Demeuse at 215 both came in third.

Other top-six finishes for Gladstone included Alex Chouinard at 160 and junior Doby Gilles at 189 in fifth place, and junior Nick Dawson at 125, sophomore Lane Matzke and junior Cole Dawson at 285 in sixth.

Escanaba was 10th with 65 points, led by sophomore Hunter Larson winning the title at 135. The Eskymos also got a third from senior Scout Wunder at 171 and a fifth from freshman Brodey Bevins at 112.

Gaylord won the team title with 240, far ahead of runner-up Sparta’s 181 1/2 as New Lothrop was third with 174 and Pulaski, Wisconsin, fourth with 146.

Also from the U.P., St. Ignace was 16th with 17 points and Iron Mountain was 18th with 9.
