IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain closed a large deficit in the fourth and final set to defeat Westwood in a Mid-Peninsula Conference volleyball match on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers won 25-18, 25-16, 26-24, 26-24.

IM was down 23-15 in the final set when junior Hanna Ellis began a serving run that tied the score 23-23. After the Patriots scored a point to get to match point, Iron Mountain tied it again at 24-24 and finished the night with two more consecutive points to end the match.

“She’s been serving strong all season,” Iron Mountain head coach Jeanne Newberry said of Ellis. “For her to continuously be consistent, she did not give up on her serves. She placed that ball in and she was serving hard.”

Ellis finished the night with five service aces, 13 digs, 23 assists, five kills and a block.

Elizabeth Farley kept the Patriots in the hunt throughout the night with 14 kills, four aces and 14 digs.

“Liz is a very smart player. She knows when she should be hitting the ball and when she should be tipping it,” Westwood coach Heather Salmi said. “I thought Sarah Rautio did a good job setting it and with those better sets, we could get some good kills. They’re good at talking, back row to the front row and where the open spots are, so that’s good as well.”

The Patriots’ comeback in the third set came after they got used to the closed-in space, with a ceiling that is significantly lower than their home gym in Ishpeming.

“I told them what they needed to do with their arms,” Salmi said. “We talked a little bit about the angle and how we need to have someone backing up if there’s a ball hit straight up in the air. I just think they moved their feet better and got in a better rhythm. I thought we played a lot more offense in Games 3 and 4. They had to play a lot more defense.”

Westwood came out slow in the first two sets, and coupled with having trouble passing, IM quickly grabbed a two-set lead.

“We started out a little bit slow. Maybe we were a little bit intimidated because last time we played we got beat 3-0,” Salmi said. “We started to get our rhythm a little bit. Aliya Leach I thought served great. Liz Farley and Katie (Wiljanen) did a good job in the middle.

“The first two games I told them they were slow on every single ball. They just started moving their feet a little bit better.”

Westwood has its final regular-season match tonight at Gwinn, while Iron Mountain plays at Ishpeming on Thursday in a match rescheduled from last week.

The Mountaineers JV also won, 25-12, 25-12, 15-6.
