Norway Knights charge past Ishpeming Hematites for sweep on softball diamond

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming Hematites softball team had a rough day Tuesday afternoon, getting swept in a home doubleheader against Norway.

The Knights won the first game 6-1 and the second 10-0. The Hematites (10-6) managed only eight hits over the two games.

“Today was ugly,” Ishpeming head coach Ben McGuire said. “We didn’t get a lot of hits and we just weren’t ready to play. We’re going to have to be much better (today).”

Ishpeming plays a makeup twinbill at Negaunee at 4 p.m. today.

In Tuesday’s first game, Norway (15-9) got on the board first with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Ishpeming got one back in its half of the frame, but the Knights padded their lead with two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to cap off the win.

The Hematites were led by sophomore Willow LaChappelle, who had a single and RBI. Madison Pruett and Korey Kaukola both had hits for Ishpeming.

Emma Bleau took the loss in the pitching circle for the Hematites, giving up six runs on four hits while striking out 10.

The nightcap was worse for Ishpeming as Norway led 7-0 after two innings. The Knights added another in the fourth and two in the sixth to finish off the sweep.

Ishpeming pitcher Kayla Kaukola was dealt the loss after giving up eight runs on seven hits in four innings. Five Hematites had a hit.
