Marquette sweeps to Marquette Invitational golf titles

MARQUETTE — Led by medalists Ellie Hicks and Tyler Bergwall, Marquette swept to the girls and boys titles at its own triangular high school golf meet held at the Marquette Golf Club on Monday.

Hicks carded 51 to lead the MSHS girls to a 238 total, 11 strokes better than Munising’s 249 as Ishpeming recorded 280.

Hicks only won her individual title by two strokes over the Mustangs’ Bailey Downs, who shot 53. After that came Munising’s Frankie Mattson with 59, with the next two scorers from the Redettes, Janae Peterson shooting 58 and Sierra Bentti 61.

Next was the Hematites’ Desiree Neveau with 62 and MSHS’ Aspen Michelin and the Mustangs’ Marissa Immel with 68. Also breaking 70 were Munising’s Taylor Downs and Ishpeming’s Rylee Ring, each with 69.

With birdies on the first and ninth hole on the Heritage course, Bergwall shot 36 to lead the Redmen to 160, well ahead of the MSHS B team’s 199 and Munising’s 203. Ishpeming didn’t field a full team.

The boys top five scorers were from Marquette — Jordan Jurmu added 40, Ethan Sellers 41, Andrew Filizetti 43 and Kyle Nemacheck 45.

Next came Munising’s Anthony Mattson and Marquette B golfer Karsten Kamps, each with 47. Ishpeming’s lone representative, Tanner Romback, shot 67.
