Escanaba sweeps Marquette Redettes in high school softball

MARQUETTE — Escanaba swept a pair of three-run decisions from Marquette in a high school doubleheader hosted by the Redettes on Monday afternoon.

Escanaba posted a 3-0 shutout in the opener before winning 4-1 in the nightcap.

In another doubleheader played in Gwinn, Negaunee also swept the Modeltowners, winning 12-0 in five innings and 11-3. Details from that twinbill weren’t available.

In Marquette, Chelsea Wiggins was the hard-luck loser of Game 1, going the distance in the pitching circle as she gave up three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out 10.

Esky’s Gabi Salo also went all seven innings, allowing no runs on six hits and a walk while fanning 11.

The Eskymos scored all their runs in the third inning, according to a report from MSHS coach Paul Seibert.

For the Redettes, Megan McIntire was 2 for 2 with a double and sacrifice bunt, while teammate Hannah Bulinski went 2 for 3 with a double and stolen base.

Esky’s Lexi Challier was 2 for 3 with a run, two stolen bases and what Seibert characterized as a nice running catch in the outfield that thwarted a Marquette rally. Teammate Savannah Barron had a double and scored a run.

In the nightcap, McIntire took the loss while pitching all seven innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks as she struck out four.

Escanaba’s pitcher and her numbers weren’t available.

While Marquette jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead, Esky tied it in the second and scored the three go-ahead runs in the sixth.

Freshman Sofia Vandenende paced MSHS hitters, going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Bulinski was 1 for 2 with a run scored, Wiggins 1 for 3 with a triple and Stasha Warchock 1 for 2 with a walk and two stolen bases.

The Eskymos were paced by Taylor Gauthier going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Challier 1 for 3 with a run scored.

Among these area teams, Negaunee hosts Westwood in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. today, while Marquette and Gwinn return to action Wednesday. The Redettes hosts Rapid River in a 4 p.m. twinbill while Gwinn is at Munising for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
