MSHS softball picks up victories

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High softball team picked up three wins in the past week with pitcher Chelsea Wiggins playing a huge role in the success.

The Redettes topped Gladstone 8-0 Friday, Apr. 14 and then earned two victories Saturday, 1-0 over Rapid River and 10-0 over Norway.

Wiggins threw a no-hitter agains the Braves and a perfect game against the Knights.

Marquette also lost a game Saturday, 3-2 to Westwood.

In its season opener Friday, the Redettes used a strong outing in the circle from Chelsea Wiggins to take down the Braves. Wiggins threw a no-hitter and racked up 11 strikeouts. She also hit a two-run triple.

Hannah Bulinski led Marquette offensively with two hits, two stolen bases and a run scored. Kaleigh Duncan and Stasha Warchock both had two hits for the Redettes.

In the first game Saturday, Wiggins was the star again as she struck out 16 Rapid River hitters to earn the shutout win. She also scored the only run of the game on a wild pitch.

During the second contest, Marquette mercy-ruled the Knights again behind yet another impressive performance from Wiggins. She notched 13 strikeouts in the circle during her perfect outing and also drove in five runs at the plate including an inside-the-park home run. Duncan had three hits and two runs scored in the game for the Redettes, while Warchock stole three bases.

In the final game, Marquette couldn’t keep its momentum going at the plate as it left 11 runners on base in the contest.

Duncan went 4 for 4 with an RBI and Bulinski had two hits for the Redettes. Megan McIntyre took the loss for Marquette after giving up three runs on six hits in her first varsity start in the circle.

Marquette will play in the Gladstone Invitational Saturday.
