Superior Central girls basketball team unable to capitalize on last-minute chances against Big Bay de Noc

ST. NICHOLAS — It came down to the last seconds but the Big Bay de Noc girls basketball team squeaked by with a victory over Superior Central 38-36 during a Class D district tournament semifinal game on Monday.

The Black Bears held a 30-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter and built a six-point lead down the stretch.

The Cougars then scored four straight points to come within two heading into the final minute.

Big Bay missed three free throws in the last minute to give Superior Central a chance at a last-second possession before turning it over to end the game.

SC coach Greg Trowbridge felt there were things his team could have done better but was pleased overall with how his girls played.

“I thought we gave a real good effort,” Trowbridge said. “We still had some of the same mistakes we had all year and that hurt us a little bit. We’re not real deep and foul trouble hurt us a little bit. I thought it was a well fought battle.”

Junior Brooke Dalgord led the Black Bears with 13 points while sophomore Holli Stapleton added 12.

Junior Emma Rondeau led the Cougars with 19 points and sophomore Sydney Emard added 11.
