Mattsons earn top awards for Skyline Central girls basketball

MUNISING — The undefeated Munising Mustangs carted off several special awards and a number of all-league selections, while Superior Central picked up a first-team selection in Skyline Central Conference girls basketball awards announced this week.

Senior Frankie Mattson was the big winner, named Player of the Year for leading the Mustangs to a 13-0 league mark in winning the championship and 20-0 regular season.

Her father, Mark Mattson, was named league Coach of the Year, while Munising junior Kianne Wendt won the Skyline Free Throw Award.

Joining the unanimous selection of Mustangs’ senior Marissa Immel on the league First Team was Superior Central junior Emma Rondeau.

On the Second Team are Wendt and senior Bailey Downs, while junior Kelsea Ackerman made honorable mention.

Immel and junior teammate Marissa Ackerman were unanimous picks to the league’s All Defensive Team.

Munising also won the JV championship by matching the varsity team with a perfect 13-0 league record. SC was 2-11.
