Marquette’s Amber Huebner, Ben Smith sweep top Great Northern Conference girls basketball awards

KINGSFORD — Marquette senior Amber Huebner has earned two of the major girls basketball awards from the Great Northern Conference.

League coaches named Huebner the Player of the Year along with Defensive Player of the Year.

The other major award went to her coach, Ben Smith, as Coach of the Year, after he led the Redettes to a perfect 8-0 record in conference games.

MSHS junior Claudia Hale was named to the First Team, while senior teammate Kellsey Grange landed on the Second Team.

Two more Marquette players earned honorable mentions — senior Sara Iwanicki and junior Stasha Warchock.

First Team — Jeny Brandt, sr., Escanaba; Hannah Carlson, sr., Kingsford; Jordyn Kriegl, jr., Kingsford; Claudia Hale, jr., Marquette; Avrie Stewart, sr., Menominee.

Second Team — Kellsey Grange, sr., Marquette; Taylor Hunter, jr., Gladstone; Renee Roberts, jr., Kingsford; Morgan Roman, sr., Menominee; Maddy Willis, sr., Escanaba.

Honorable mention — Taylor Gauthier, jr., Escanaba; Lexi Chaillier, soph., Escanaba; Sara Iwanicki, sr., Marquette; Stasha Warchock, jr., Marquette; Alyssa Polley, sr., Gladstone; Kaitlyn Hardwick, jr., Gladstone; Paige Reiswitz, sr., Menominee; Corrina Anderson, sr., Menominee; Abby Tomasoski, sr., Kingsford; Sam Cross, jr., Kingsford.

All Defensive Team — Brandt, Escanaba; Hardwick, Gladstone; Kriegl, Kingsford; Bri Robinson, sr., Kingsford; Roman, Menominee.
