Marquette Redmen’s Ian Ogea, Brad Nelson awarded special Great Northern Conference boys basketball honors

ESCANABA — Marquette senior Ian Ogea and coach Brad Nelson won two of the three special awards in the Great Northern Conference as the Redmen captured the league title with a perfect 8-0 record.

Ogea was named the GNC Defensive Player of the Year, while Nelson earned Coach of the Year accolades.

Escanaba’s Tyler Willette and Gladstone’s Reece Castor split the Player of the Year award.

Freshman Joe Ostrowsky and senior Alex DuVall were Marquette’s representative on the league’s First Team, senior teammate Garrett Finkbeiner made the Second Team, and a trio of Redmen made up a majority of the Special Mention players — Ogea, junior Trey McFerrin and freshman Luke Ogea.

Escanaba was the GNC junior varsity winner with a 7-1 league mark, while MSHS captured the freshman conference title with a perfect 8-0 record.

Special Mention — Ian Ogea, sr., Marquette; Rudy Pederson, soph., Gladstone; Hunter Botruff, sr., Gladstone; Luke Ogea, fr., Marquette; Trey McFerrin, jr., Marquette.

Honorable mention — Levi Kempka, sr., Menominee; Jack Stephenson, sr., Gladstone; Jared Nash, soph., Escanaba; C.J. Barron, sr., Escanaba.
