Marquette boys basketball team races to win at Gwinn

GWINN — Marquette’s offense caught fire early as the Redmen ran off with an 87-51 victory at Gwinn in a high school boys basketball game played Tuesday.

“The toughest thing with Marquette is that they run 11 or 12 guys out against you without any real falloff,” Modeltowners first-year coach Jim Finkbeiner said. “If you try to take away somebody like Joe Ostrowsky, that leaves (Garrett) Finkbeiner or Luke Ogea open.

“They’re a very athletic team. They can go up and down the floor with their type of players.”

Despite Gwinn staying close for much of the first quarter, the Redmen broke free late to post a 22-13 lead after one quarter. GHS again stayed within hailing distance for awhile in the second before MSHS ran off with a 50-27 halftime edge.

Eleven Marquette players scored at least one basket, led by Ogea with 15 points and Ostrowsky with 14. Ian Ogea added 10.

Gwinn big man Reed Weidenhoefer led all scorers with 21 points. Teammate Tucker Taylor added 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while Austin Forbes scored 10 points.

Finkbeiner was also pleased that he was able to get little-used senior Tyler Desautelle into the game late despite not having a timeout left.

“Marquette was really classy when (coach) Brad Nelson called a timeout so we could get Tyler in,” Finkbeiner said as Desautelle managed a pair of baskets for four points.

Marquette also won the JV game, 51-27.

The Redmen (18-1) complete their regular season at Houghton on Thursday, while Gwinn (7-13) awaits a Class C district tournament game at home against Ishpeming next Wednesday night.

At Iron River, the Wykons’ AJ Weisnicht scored eight of his team-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Leading 42-40 after three quarters, WIC converted 9 of 13 free throws over the final eight minutes.

“We came out and played well. They came out and played well,” WIC coach Dan Schive said.

Weisnicht added four steals for the Wykons, who shot 40 percent from the floor and made 11 turnovers.

Hart Holmgren led the Hematites (8-10) with 24 points.

“Holmgren had two 3s from an ungodly long way,” Schive said of shots that kept the game close at the end.

Ishpeming, which won the JV game 62-45, can play spoiler in the Mid-Peninsula Conference on Thursday. A win over Norway would prevent the Knights from claiming a share of the league crown with Negaunee.
