AUBURN HILLS — Three area seniors won matches Thursday, but all 10 participating wrestlers from the area are still alive in the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals being held at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Because of the huge numbers of wrestlers — there are nearly 900 over four divisions, with 16 entries in each weight class — only one round was scheduled for Thursday. The event continues today with state champions crowned on Saturday.

Winners stay alive in the winner’s bracket with a shot at a state title, while losers fall into the consolation bracket where third place is still a possibility.

The area’s lone Division 2 finalist, Beau Caster of Marquette, advanced at 160 pounds. The senior with a 41-5 record this season pinned senior Dominic Mancina of Allen Park in 1 minutes, 28 seconds.

This morning, he’ll face senior Lucas McFarland (51-2) of DeWitt, who won 10-1 on Thursday.

Two other wrestlers advanced in Division 4.

From Gwinn, Kevin Roberts (41-8) pinned Trent Sexton of Clinton in 1:05 and today faces Tylor Grames (38-12) of Hudson, who won his match 14-4.

Manistique’s Tanner Gonzalez, who sports a perfect 43-0 record this season, scored a major decision over Abel Vilches-Mendoza of Hart, 16-5. This morning, he faces Michael Nuyen (36-9) of Decatur, who won 19-8.
