Win turns Marquette into Class A girls basketball district tournament host

GAYLORD — The northernmost Class A girls basketball district tournament in the state now runs through Marquette.

The Redettes earned their shot at hosting the rest of the tourney after defeating district host Gaylord 52-31 in the northern Lower Peninsula community on Monday night.

Because they’re participating in a “nontraditional” district, a type usually reserved for widely dispersed teams like this, Marquette in effect takes over the host’s role for the rest of the district.

That means Marquette hosts Petoskey at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals, and if they win then, would host the district championship at 6 p.m. Friday against Wednesday’s survivor of Alpena and Traverse City West.

On Monday, however, the Redettes took care of business right away, building leads of 16-7 after one quarter and 34-13 at halftime.

Marquette made 16 of 37 shots, good for 43 percent, including 12 of 25 from 2-point range for 48 percent.

And the Redettes sizzled at the line, sinking 16 of 19 for 84 percent.

Gaylord’s Casey Korte led all scorers with 22 points, including three 3s.

When Marquette was on offense, Peterson and Huebner each pumped in 14 points, Peterson hitting 3 of 5 on triples and Huebner 4 of 6 on deuces to go with five steals, four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.

“Amber had a good all-around floor game,” Smith said. “She was aggressive when she had to be.”

Mo Miller added nine points for Marquette (18-3).

Newberry 66, Rudyard 43

In Class C at Rudyard, the Bryant sisters combined to outscore the host Bulldogs when they finished with 50 points.

Senior and past all-stater Taylor Bryant scored 29 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out six assists and making six steals.

Freshman sister Makenna Bryant dropped in 21 points, which included four 3-pointers.

But their father and Newberry head coach Fred Bryant was concerned about his team’s defense.

“We played them twice earlier this season and each win was by more than 40 points,” he said. “We just lacked energy. We were doing things we typically don’t do. Hopefully we can refocus for Wednesday night.”

That’s the night the Indians play at 6 p.m. against St. Ignace, which blasted winless Manistique 75-36 in Monday’s other game.

Cierra Molina paced Rudyard with 19 points.

In Class C at Rudyard, the Emeralds only trailed 39-17 at halftime before a shorthanded squad with just seven players wore down in the second half.

Renae Schuetter led the Emeralds with 16 points and Joslyn Muth scored eight points. Winkel was pleased with Schuetter’s performance against the Saints.

“She shot the ball really well tonight,” Winkel said. “She got some shots to fall tonight. She’s just a junior so hopefully tonight gave her a spark heading into next year.”

Westwood 43, Gwinn 37

In a regular-season game postponed from Friday in Gwinn, the Modeltowners couldn’t overcome two rough quarters from their offense when they scored just two points in the opening period and four in the third quarter.

“We didn’t execute like we wanted to do it for a whole game,” GHS coach Ben Olsen said. “We just couldn’t make any shots in the first and third quarters.”

Trailing just 20-16 at halftime, the visiting Patriots opened the second half with a 12-0 run to take a 32-16 lead.

Gwinn got as close as 40-35 late in the game, but Westwood made 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute to ice it.

Patriots’ freshman Madelyn Koski led all scorers with 15 points.

For Gwinn, Tierra Taylor scored 10 points.

The Modeltowners won the JV game, 43-32.
