Tournaments in high gear: It’s win-or-go-home time for high school hockey, girls basketball teams

MARQUETTE — Cross your fingers that the weather cooperates as we enter March, since this week and next week are possibly the two busiest high school sports weeks of the whole school year.

This week features girls basketball district tournaments and hockey regional events along with the final week of the boys basketball regular season.

Next week will get the boys basketball districts going along with girls regionals and hockey quarterfinals onto the state finals.

For this week, the most tournament action takes place Wednesday night, since a few districts are running today and Wednesday, others only going on Wednesday and Friday and those with more than four teams needing all three nights to complete their schedules.

Hockey regionals, at least in Marquette County, run Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, though L’Anse’s tourney at Michigan Tech takes place on Wednesday and Saturday.

Only two districts in girls basketball along with the Division 2 hockey regional are “nontraditional,” meaning there isn’t one single site hosting all the games.

It sets up a couple interesting scenarios, both involving Marquette Senior High School.

If the Redettes win their Class A district opener tonight at host Gaylord, Marquette in effect becomes the host for the rest of the district, setting up home games against Lower Peninsula teams on Wednesday, and if they win again, in the district championship on Friday.

In hockey, if Marquette defeats Escanaba on Tuesday, the Redmen host again Thursday against Negaunee or Kingsford, though the regional final shifts downstate to Gaylord no matter what.

L’Anse is also in a nontraditional Class C girls basketball district hosted by Ironwood, but the Purple Hornets won’t get a chance to host any games based on where they landed in the bracket.

To avoid girls basketball tourney games, boys basketball games were originally scheduled only on Tuesday and Thursday this week. However, several games had to be moved to tonight due to recent postponements, including Negaunee at Norway boys and even Westwood at Gwinn girls.

Here is the tournament schedule, day by day, for this week. Included are games without area teams if the district or regional itself has at least one area team:
