Phillips nets 2 goals in MSHS win Tuesday

MARQUETTE — Sophomore Tanner Phillips scored twice and added an assist in Marquette’s 7-1 high school hockey victory over Negaunee at Lakeview Arena on Tuesday night.

The Redmen’s special teams were clicking on this night.

Including one by Phillips, the Redmen (14-8-2) scored on their only two power-play chances along with notching a shorthanded tally by junior Hunter Doucette late in the first period.

Phillips’ power-play tally came just 2:22 into the game, while another man-advantage goal by sophomore teammate Thomas Dunleavy came with 22 seconds remaining in the second period.

Marquette built a 5-0 lead before Negaunee got on the board when Erik Voskuhl scored with 3:18 left in the second. Anthony Hammermaster and Eric Hurst earned assists on the tally.

Marquette also got goals from sophomore Nick Leafers, senior Alec Gadzinski and sophomore Sean O’Connor, the latter the only score of the third period.

Junior Ethan Jones and senior Ryan Morrissey each had two assists for the Redmen, who finish their regular season tonight at Calumet.

Marquette and Negaunee open the postseason with preregional games on Tuesday at Lakeview Arena. The Redmen face Escanaba while the Miners take on Kingsford.
